The Science in the Liberal Arts project is designed to assist EKU faculty in designing lessons that can be implemented in courses across the general education curriculum for the purpose of increasing scientific and technological knowledge of our student population so that they may critically analyze the scientific information they discover, identify underlying assumptions, and make appropriate inferences. Please contact Lynnette Noblitt for additional information.
QEP – Science and the Liberal Arts Project
The purpose of the Science and the Liberal Arts Project is to assist EKU faculty in designing coursework that can be implemented across the general education curriculum to promote student literacy and empowerment in addressing issues of how science affects society. In the pilot phase, the project will take the form of a course devoted to the study of scientific issues from a non-scientific perspective.
This interdisciplinary project will need support from many departments across the university. To develop and teach this course, faculty from a variety of non-science departments will be invited to help design and implement a series of lesson plans applying their expertise to understand and analyze one or more technological advancements. Science faculty will also be invited to design and implement lesson plans to teach the students and faculty involved in the class the technological advancements and basic underlying scientific principles. All faculty participating will be eligible for a $500 summer stipend and $1,200 professional development funds. There are also funds available for the purchase of resources (i.e., books, software).
Once the pilot course is complete, faculty– particularly those involved in general education courses – will be encouraged to incorporate pertinent components of the project into their courses and to utilize the resources compiled on the Science and the Liberal Arts web page. To encourage further student engagement and involvement throughout campus, the Science and the Liberal Arts Project will host a series of lectures on the pertinent technological topics that will complement lesson plans on the Science and the Liberal Arts web page. |
